I now know exactly why Dorothy was so shocked to be out of Kansas! I swear it took 2 hours to get from NC to Kansas City then 40 days and 40 nights to get from one side of Kansas to the other side! Kansas required coffee, coffee, coffee, and then a Mtn Dew. I think I left part of my soul in Kansas. Okay, yes, I’m exaggerating but y’all, did I mention Kansas?
Plans change, and it may be what I’m going to love most about our current lifestyle. Our original plan was to leave on the 16th of September. I was going to take Alice, the camper, to visit our daughter at college with my friend Carrie. Jeremy was going to Snowshoe, West Virginia with friends for a World Cup MTB race. Our plan was to meet in Roanoke, VA and we were going to leave from there… We did indeed leave on the 16th to our intended destinations but we decided that we would meet back at home and pack and get our house in order. We would then leave first thing Wednesday morning. We left Thursday late afternoon… Our family and friends were taking over/under bets on when we would leave.
We left at 2:00pm and didn’t quite make it to our first night destination. We were tired and there was the perfect Cracker Barrel waiting for us to pull in. On the road we “boondock” at places that allow overnight parking and stays. Our first choice is always Cabela’s and second is a Cracker Barrel and last resort is a Wal-mart. We are also part of Harvest Host. These are private farms, vineyards, and breweries that allow you to stay in exchange for your business. We use these when we are moving at a leisurely pace and have time to stay for a while, not a late night stop and an early morning departure. When we are on a mission and driving long hour days Jeremy usually finds where we are going to stay, calls ahead, makes sure it’s okay we pull in late, wake up early and head out.
So we drove from 2:00pm to 11:00pm and stayed in an unknown city close to Lexington, Kentucky at a Cracker Barrel. Then drove out the next morning around 8:00 and drove until 9:30 that evening and stayed in Kansas City at a Cabela’s. Then on to Niwot, CO, arriving at 6:30, after driving days and days in Kansas.
